Say No to a 10 Lane Motorway

by timpickstone on 30 July, 2020

There is still time to have your say in the consultation on making the M60 bigger as it passes Prestwich, Whitefield and Simister.

Highways England are proposing to spend up to £340 million on:
– making the M60 10 lanes (5 in each direction) between Junction 17 (Prestwich) and Junction 18 (Simister). This is by using both hard shoulders as running lanes.
– extending the size of the Simister Island junction, either through a second roundabout or a flyover and loop to the north of the M62.

Find out more about the proposals here.

Three great reasons to say NO to the proposals:

  • Highways England admit that these changes will increase the amount of traffic on this motorway, and make no difference to air pollution. We already have high levels of air pollution in this area, we need a scheme that will reduce this.
  • 10 lanes is too much. Between Prestwich and Whitefield the M60 passes through heavily built residential areas. This is not the right place for a 10 lane motorway.
  • Let’s spend £340 million on something better. Imagine what a difference could be made if £340 million was spent on better public transport, more trams, electric buses, better cycling and walking facilities. Let’s spend this money on making peoples lives better, not motorways bigger.

If you agree please sign our petition against these proposals here.

Whatever your views please take part in the Highways England consultation here. (Before 17 August 2020.)

This will just increase air pollution not reduce it and inevitably there will be more accidents. Let alone the disruption and overnight working disturbing local residents!
