Simister Island / 10 Lane Motorway consultation opens

by timpickstone on 24 June, 2020

Highways England have now opened the public consultation on its proposals to significantly increase the motorway as it passes between Prestwich and Whitefield.

The plans include making the Motorway between junctions 17 and 18 (Prestwich to Simister) 10 lanes (5 running lanes in each direction, with no hard shoulder) and two different options for increasing the capacity of the Simister Island junction:

  • A flyover and loop to the north of the M62
  • A second roundabout inside the existing structure.

It could cost up to £340m, depending on which option was chosen, and work could start by 2024 with it opening in 2026.

Take part in the public consultation, and find out more information on the proposals here.

Prestwich has had to live next to an increasingly busy motorway for decades, with all the air pollution that brings.
Our view is that that surely the answer cannot always be to build even bigger motorways, particularly so close to so many people’s houses and schools.

Imagine how £340 million could be spent on improving public transport and safer roads?
