Heaton Park Update

by timpickstone on 19 November, 2019

Last week local Councillors Cristina Tegolo and Tim Pickstone met with the Heaton Park Manager to discuss a number of issues around the park, in particular as they affect Prestwich residents who live around the park.

Parklife
We discussed issues around the impact of Parklife on neighbouring areas, particularly a number of critical areas which have been the subject of parking or anti-social behaviour problems in the past.

Particular concerns have been raised this year about repairing the park following its use for four nights of summer events in June this year, a process which has been made more difficult because of wet weather.

One thing that will change for 2020, in response to feedback from residents, is that there are no plans for a second weekend concert, so the Parklife Weekend will be restricted to event itself on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June 2020, with a separate Friday 12th concert yet to be announced.

Lightopia
Lightopia is a new event coming to Heaton Park for the first time this year. It runs from 21 November to 31 December 2019 in the area of the Park around the lake.

Lightopia is (according to their website) “a brand new immersive and visually-dramatic lantern and light festival, that promises to fuse beautiful art installations with human experience”. Entry is via with the Sheepfoot Lane car park entrance, or the Bury Old Road tram station entrance from 5pm – 8.30pm each day, with the event over by 10pm.

Traffic restrictions are being put in place on Sheepfoot Lane. The Park is going to monitor how parking affects the local area so please do let us know if problems occur so they can be addressed.

Bonfire Night
We raised the very significant levels of concern that had been raised from residents who live on all sides of the park around parking for Bonfire Night this year.

The event was very successful and well attended (48,000 people), but obviously this had a huge impact on surrounding streets.

Heaton Park have agreed to go away and look at what additional traffic and parking management is needed for 5th November in the future, as the event has got so large.

Golf Course
The golf course is currently closed, but the Park is in discussions with a new provider.

Any questions please ask!

Did you get a response to my e-mail to you regarding the path into the park from St Margaret’s entrance?
