Major bus changes in the Bury New Road area

by prestwichfocus on 4 March, 2015

Transport for Greater Manchester and Bus Operators are proposing some significant changes to the bus services which currently serve the Hilton Lane, Butterstile Lane and Bury New Road areas of Prestwich. Not directly relevant to us in Holyrood Ward – but may well affect residents who use the buses to travel across Prestwich, or who connect onto the buses to get to Salford, Radcliffe or Unsworth.

The proposed changes are:

92 (Manchester – Carr Clough – Pilsworth – Bury)
CLOSED

93 (Manchester – Carr Clough – Whitefield – Bury)
Changed to just Manchester – Carr Clough ONLY – but increased to every 15 minutes (currently every 30 minutes)

95 (Salford Shopping City – Whitefield)
This service is being extended to run through to Bury via Stanley Road, Parr Lane, Ribble Drive, Mersey Drive, Kennedy Drive, Parr Lane, Hollins Lane, Hollins Brow and Manchester Road.
In Prestwich the route is being amended from being along Hilton Lane, to along Butterstile Lane

97 NEW SERVICE (Manchester – Prestwich – Unsworth – Bury)
New service 97 operating between Manchester and Bury via Bury New Road from Besses o’th’ Barn, Thatch Leach Lane, Oak Lane, Ribble Drive, Parr Lane via Unsworth and Hollins and Manchester Road, Parkhills Road, Market Street to Bury Interchange.
The service will operate every 20 minutes Monday to Saturday daytime and every 30 minutes Sunday daytime.

98 – Manchester – Prestwich – Radcliffe – Bury)
Reduced from every 15 minutes to every 20 minutes – however the 97 and 98 combined will mean an every 10 minute service from Manchester to Whitefield up Bury New Road.

The good news is a good 10 minute frequency up Bury New Road from Manchester to Prestwich AND a good 15 minute service from the Carr Clough and Rainsough areas to Manchester.

The BAD news is the loss in service between Rainsough, Hilton Lane, and the Carr Clough area northwards towards Prestwich Village, Whitefield and Bury. At the moment there are FOUR buses an hour going from the Carr Clough area of Prestwich to Prestwich Village and beyond – in the new proposal there will only be ONE bus an hour.

T4GM are considering the decisions on Friday (6th March). Please do get in touch if you wish representations to be made about these important changes .

  1. Bury People First is an organisation that represents learning disabled adults. A considerable number of our members use the 93 bus route and many other people who use learning disability day services also use the 93. In particular there are people we know who use the 93 between Carr Clough and Prestwich, Whitefield and Bury.

Some people have spent a considerable amount of time learning the routes through the support of Bury People First and its ‘Out and About’ Travel Training Scheme. Being able to use public transport and in particular the 93 route has opened up a whole new aspect to their lives, being able to access college, leisure facilities and employment or just meeting up with friends. However, for many independent travel does not come easy and in some instances changes such as these can isolate people and put an end to their independent travel and consequently have a detrimental effect upon the lifestyles.

People we have spoken to are absolutely devastated by the news of the changes and how they could affect them. Please let us know if anything can be done to stop these changes.

We have heard that the 154 hospital bus is to cease running. This has been told to us by passengers on the bus and by the driver on the 154 this morning. Would you please confirm if this is correct please..

    • Paul says:

It is correct that the 154 is withdrawn but it is being replaced by new bus 94 between N.M.G.H and Pilsworth still every hour it just doesnt run to Bury anymore for some reason which does not make sense to me

Why can’t the 93 run to the Prestwich village as far as Tesco? This would enable people to go shopping, work and school without the inconvenience the new proposal is going to cause. Also the alteration to the 95 route will miss out 5 bus stops why? This will cause further inconvenience to people who will have to carry shopping from Butterstile Lane. First Bus certainly have not thought about their customers.

I used 92/93 busses because they got me to Littleton road/Salford quickly but since the changes it has made it difficult as I have to get up and out of the house earlier and I have to change busses just so I can get to my final destination. First bus needs to make some changes again. Unsatisfied customer!!
