GREATER Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) is currently consulting the public on some proposed changes to the fire stations across the county.

In all, eight fire stations across the county will be ‘downgraded’, these include Bury Fire Station and also one of our local stations – Broughton Fire Station on Bury New Road.

Broughton is being reduced from two fire engines to one, and form eight fire fighters on duty to just one.

GMFRS tell us that there has been a 40% reduction in callouts in recent years, and that the changes will have negligable impact on response times.

We are worried about the impact on Prestwich with Broughton being downgraded and have already asked questions of Bury’s reps on the Fire Authority.
