Heaton Park Lakeside Cafe to Close (for consultation)

by prestwichfocus on 18 January, 2013

Heaton Park management have issued the following information:

“As you will be aware, for some time now we have been reviewing the Park’s catering arrangements to make sure that they offer the best service for Park visitors and to minimise the cost to the Council. This was identified as a priority for action in the Park’s business plan that was made public last May.

The Lakeside Café, operated by the Council’s Trading Services will cease operating in its current form on Friday 25 January.

Over the next two months Park users and stakeholders will be able to have their say about the new catering provision because between now and the end of February, a survey will be carried out to find out what sort of food and drink visitors might want during a day out at Heaton Park, and the results will be used to find the best ways to provide this service.

Anyone interested in taking part in the survey can either complete a questionnaire or attend one of the informal discussion sessions that will take place during the consultation period. The various park stakeholder groups will be contacted in due course with dates to attend focus groups to discuss the catering.

It is expected that a new catering service will start in the summer, but in the meantime visitors will still be able to buy snacks and hot drinks from a mobile unit situated outside the building and use the facilities in the café building.”

If you are interested in being involved in the consultation please let me know and I can put you in touch.

Absolute disgusting decision by Manchester City council. I have lived within a mile of the park for over 50 years & it used to be a local jewel – with a visit to the cafe being one of the highlights. These days Manchester council see the park as a cash cow (pop concerts, etc), but heaven help any part of the park that isn’t (apparently) paying it’s way. The council should be putting money into the cafe to encourage new business – not shutting the place.

I find it absurd that Bury has no parks to worry about. Why is this. Heaton Park is a success. Why is this… mmm lack of intervention from people who know very little about how to run popular and attractive park facilities.

I can’t believe the cafe is closing before the consultation takes place. Why can’t the consultation take place while the cafe is still open? Then take action based on the results of the consultation?
I personally enjoyed the food provided by the current catering company.
Please can I be notified how I can be included in the consultation procedure. Thank you.

Two weeks on the run now have purchased food from the mobile unit outside the Boatlake cafe (although this week it has moved inside the origninal cafe) after the Park Run. The food is inedible, unhygienic and really really unhealthy. My daughter asked for a sausage roll, which she saw on the hot plate, I purchased it for her and they proceeded to disappear into the back for about 10 minutes and then came back with what I can only describe as the worst sausage roll I have ever seen, it looked like it had been deep fried to heat it up, in fact it was scolding hot to touch but the middle of the sausage was stone cold. I question the food safety standards of this set up and I certainly would not let my daughter eat it, in fact I wouldn’t even feed it to my dog. Something needs to be done about this before someone gets food poisoning. I will not spend any more money in this shambles of a food outlet.
