Bonfire Night – Parking Restrictions and Road Closures

by timpickstone on 30 October, 2012

Heaton Park will be hosting its annual Bonfire and Fireworks Display onMonday, 5th November 2012.

The annual Bonfire and Fireworks Display will be taking place in Heaton Park on Monday 5 November 2012. A number of traffic management arrangements were put in place in 2011 and these are being developed further this year. If you live near to the park, or need to use this part of Bury Old Road or Whittaker Lane these arrangements may affect you.

The following affect Holyrood Ward:

Bury Old Road
You may recall that 2011 saw the introduction of traffic management on Bury Old Road / Whittaker Lane junction to aid the safe crossing of pedestrians by way of temporary traffic lights. However, although this worked well for the pedestrians, the general consensus is that did not work as well as anticipated in regards to the traffic, which was held up for a significant time with the lights being on red.

A decision has been made this year to implement road closures as follows:
· Bury Old Road, between Newtown Street and Sheepfoot Lane junctions.
· Whittaker Lane, between Bury Old Road and Infant Street

The closure will be in place from 6.30pm until 10.00pm, however, the park will only be looking to physically close the road for as short a time as possible to aid the entry and exit. It is anticipated that the road will be closed from 6.30pm – 7.30pm for access and then again from 8.30pm – 9.30pm for exiting.

Each end of the road will be stewarded and access during the closure period will be facilitated by G4S Event security. You will need to provide proof of address by way of a utility bill or similar which can be shown to the security officers to permit access.

Vehicles will not be permitted to travel along Bury Old Road through the junction with Whittaker Lane during this period, so we would request that you access Bury Old Road from the correct side i.e.at Sheepfoot Lane (south of Whittaker Lane) or at Newtown Street (North of Whittaker Lane).

St Margaret’s Road
In order to keep the main routes around the park clear, a Traffic Regulation Order will be introduced on St Margaret’s Road. On the day of the event, no waiting cones will be placed on both sides of the road, together with signage, which will mean that visitors to the event will not be permitted to park on the road.

The Park have requested that residents make best use of their driveways if possible – or to contact the Heaton Park Manager if this isn’t possible so that a parking permit can be issued. (Details below).

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any further queries or issues. The contact details for Heaton Park if you need a parking permit, or for feedback before or after the event: 773 5388 or k.warren@manchester.gov.uk.

I think it is absolutely appalling that Prestwich residents who live along or off Bury Old Road will have to carry ID with them just to be allowed to continue along this road to get home from work because of yet another Manchester City Council event. Do we Prestwich residenst now have no rights at all?

Do you know what appalling means? It’s hardly a violation of your basic human rights. It’s just a slight inconvenience. Get a grip on reality.

The idea of a utility bill as ID is completely out of date. Most utility billing is online and these records are private. Seeing as you are talking about vehicular access, wouldn’t it be sensible to ask for a driving license, which has the licenseholders address on. Last year at the top end around Orange Hill Road traffic was chaotic with no supervision or controls. When the road became blocked from all entry points it became an issue of local peoples vehicles being put at risk of damage by visitors who would literally do anything to park for free. Late comers to the event will then speed round the streets looking for a parking space. Many of the houses in this area are terraced so we don’t have driveways so just imagine that people will try to park for free all round the park and police it please.
